Newsletter Index 1978 – Present
The Lake O’Hara Trails Club was established by Dr. George K. K. (Tommy) Link in 1948. For many years the Club, initially a small group of his like-minded friends, facilitated progress towards Link’s many ambitions for O’Hara – the ongoing development of the network of ways and trails that they had pioneered as well as preparation of guide maps for the area that was so dear to him.
Early correspondence and records of the Club reside in the archives of the Whyte Museum of Banff.
When Tommy Link last visited Lake O’Hara in the summer of 1977 he was still working on his map and trail descriptions. He passed away two years later, but not before the Trails Club that he founded was re-activated under the leadership of Tim Wake.
Tim sent out the Club’s first newsletter in 1978, wherein he wrote, “It will be our intention to keep you informed on the activities of the club and future developments of this area”. The Club had 200 members at the time.
The following year’s letter had a summary of the Annual General Meeting attached, a practice that continued through 1986.
In 1987 a proper newsletter format emerged, complete with masthead, a lead story and a number of other informative articles.
We are fortunate to have this continuous record of information about Lake O’Hara and its Trails Club available online and all the way back to that first newsletter from 1978. This summary is intended to make the content more accessible.
